Reading is a fundamental skill that enhances your comprehension, vocabulary, and overall language proficiency. At Academia BSB, we approach reading with strategies and habits tailored to different levels of intellectual maturity and understanding of English. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced learner, our goal is to develop effective reading techniques that match your current abilities and help you progress to higher levels of comprehension and engagement with the language.
Developing effective reading strategies is essential for overcoming the challenges of language comprehension. These schools often emphasize rote learning without focusing on tailored reading strategies for different proficiency levels. By using targeted reading strategies – such as skimming, scanning, and detailed reading – you can improve your ability to understand and interpret texts more effectively. Good reading habits also foster critical thinking and analytical skills, which are crucial for academic and professional success.
Fostering strong reading habits is about more than just decoding words; it’s about developing a deeper understanding of texts and encouraging a lifelong love of reading. Effective reading strategies help students engage with a variety of texts, from academic articles to literature, and adapt their approach depending on the purpose of reading. Observing students as they refine their reading skills and build their comprehension over time is both fulfilling and indicative of their overall language development. I aim to provide you with the tools and techniques to make reading a more accessible and enjoyable part of your language learning journey.
The reading skills you develop in our classes have significant real-life applications. Whether you’re reading professional documents, understanding news articles, or enjoying fiction, the ability to apply different reading strategies will enhance your comprehension and efficiency. In our lessons, we focus on various reading strategies, including:
- Skimming: Quickly identifying the main ideas of a text.
- Scanning: Finding specific information or details.
- Detailed Reading: Understanding the text deeply and critically.
Additionally, we encourage habits such as regular reading practice, setting reading goals and discussing texts to improve your engagement and retention. We do that in our classes and in our Book Club, weekly online meetings that add-up 2-hours to your roster with no additional cost. Use these opportunities to explore a new classic title of English literature each month. Participating in the Book Club is an excellent way to build and maintain reading habits while staying motivated.
By engaging with a curated selection of literary classics, you gain exposure to a variety of writing styles, themes, and historical contexts. Academia BSB’s Book Club not only provides a structured approach to reading but also fosters a sense of community among learners by allowing fellow students to input their perspectives and discuss their acquired knowledges.
Your teacher, who usually invites writers to talk about their works, will help you deepen your understanding, stimulate thoughtful discussions, and keep you motivated to continue reading regularly. These strategies help you navigate texts more effectively and enhance your overall language proficiency.
Book Club
Every Wednesday at 9pm, we have an online meeting for our Book Club. The meetings take place on our Discord server and function both as a moment of reflection and discussion, as well as a silent reading session together. In the latter case, students join in and feel more motivated to read when they realize through the camera that, even though we are all in a different place in the world, we are united by our love of literature.
The books for each month are decided by voting among students and teachers. We have already adopted classic works of literature such as Moby Dick by Herman Melville, The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald, 1984 by George Orwell; but we also honor contemporary authors such as Delia Owens, Estephenie Meyer, Jordan Peterson, Han Kang, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, etc.
In these meetings, we also offer text comprehension and interpretation activities that help the participants develop as students of the foreign language and as readers. Check it out:

Clube do Livro
Todas às quartas-feiras, às 21h, temos reunião on-line do nosso Clube do Livro. As reuniões acontecem no nosso servidor do aplicativo Discord e funcionam tanto como um momento de reflexão e discussão, quanto uma sessão de leitura silenciosa conjunta. Nesse segundo caso, os alunos vão entrando e se sentem mais motivados a ler ao perceber pela câmera que, mesmo estando cada um lugar diferente do mundo, estamos unidos pelo amor pela literatura.
Os livros de cada mês são definidos por votação entre os alunos e professores. Já adotamos obras clássias da literatura como Moby Dick de Herman Melville, The Great Gatsby de Scott Fitzgerald, 1984 de Geoge Orwell; mas também prestigiamos autores contemporâneos como Delia Owens, Estephenie Meyer, Jordan Peterson, Han Kang, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie etc.
Nesses encontros, oferecmos também atividades de compreensão e interpretação de texto que auxiliam o desenvolvimento dos participantes domo estudantes do idioma estrangeiro e como leitores. Confira:
